This first dog and two others lived on the streets in a neighbourhood of Korçë. Loved and cared for by the community. They were suddenly gone. Their careers fear foul play. Many dogs in Korçë have suddenly died from poison, bought to get rid of mice. But it ended up in the dogs.
The other dogs I have met can still be saved from poison.
Poisoning is not only cruel, but it is also ineffective. As countryside farms will keep providing ex-hunting and guarding dogs that seek to the city when their owners no longer care for them. Also it risks going by higher in the food chain and poisoning the national symbol of Albania. The eagles.
Free ranging domestic dogs are a sign of a mismanaged society. Where household waste is not collected in a safe quick manner. Where dog owners are not required to not control and take care of their dogs. Where a municipality is not able to keep up with a plan that is longer term than a few months.
Establishing a new sustainable future for the population of Albania requires better than this. Korçë and all Albanians deserve better.
I have asked FAO Albania how they see addressing the issue or free ranging domestic dogs in Albania, because it is integral to establishing agro-tourism, sustainable agriculture and tourism. I will be asking the EU delegation in Tirana the same. Because the people and the dogs of Albania need a long term and humane solution.
