“If you were given an AI-powered humanoid robot, where would you put it to work in your company?”

Would you put it in charge of a division—or relegate it to the frontlines?

This isn’t a superfluous question.

Dictador, a global drinks company based in Poland, appointed Mika, a female AI robot built by Hanson Robotics, as an “experimental” CEO and board member last year. The company’s website touts Mika as the “official face” of the rum and spirits producer and prides itself on a “rebellious mindset” and a focus on positively impacting the future. In spite of the robot's role and responsibilities, major decisions, such as terminating employees, will still be made by the company’s human executives.

Check out this video interview Reuters posted on YouTube.

Honestly, if I were given a Mika, I’m not sure where I’d put her/it in my firm. Never mind people’s resistance to being told what to do by a robot. A sufficient level of trust would probably underlie my biggest concerns. As in, could I trust the AI to tell the truth and not hallucinate? Would the AI be competent in having stakeholder interests in mind when making nuanced decisions? Who would be accountable for any mistakes or poor decisions it makes? Whose fundamental interests (programmed biases) would be embedded in the AI algorithms?

Of course, these are similar to questions about trust, competency, accountability, and biases that I have about humans in leadership roles. Perhaps the biggest difference would be in negotiating and working through conflict with an AI.

Putting artificial intelligence in a robot accelerates anthropomorphizing 1s and 0s. Would we consider naming a computer our CEO? Or would we only consider that if the computer was in a humanistic casing? Essentially, that’s what Mika is.
