Recommending an incredible book I just read by William Styron called Darkness Visible. It is about his battle with depression and it is special (and only 84 pages). If you have done battle with the ogre that is depression, I recommend it strongly. I won't try to summarize it, but I love that he describes how hard it is to win the battle against depression, but also how he staunchly believes that the battle can be won. He quotes 2 lines by Dante that are stuck with me. On Depression: "In the middle of the journey of our life I found myself in a dark wood For I had lost the right path" On winning against depression: "And so we came forth, and once again beheld the stars" Must read! https://lnkd.in/g8q4YsRS #mentalhealthmatters
If you’re someone who identifies with an underrepresented group in the workplace or has participated in one as an ally, I want to vouch for Affirm as an incredible place to work. “Why should I believe you?”, you might ask. That’s a fair question because I joke that I was designed to exploit many human biases. :) Straight Male - ✅ Engineer - ✅ Indian - ✅ Top schools - ✅ MBA - ✅ 6 foot tall - ✅ Native English speaker - ✅ Linear career with no breaks - ✅ On paper, I am the poster child of benefiting from privilege. However, in 2014, at the ripe age of 31, I was dealt my first real curveball when I had a manic break. I was diagnosed as bipolar and ended up unemployed (and eventually unemployable) for a year. I went from being a top candidate to "disabled". The personal experience after my diagnosis made me truly value Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in the workplace. Since my start at Affirm, I have been able to be my authentic self and it has been my favorite part about working here. As someone who is bipolar, I swing between the highest of highs to, occasionally, the lowest of lows. Over the summer, I experienced one of those lows, and I turned to the various Affirm communities that I am a part of for support. Connecting with the Financial Inclusion, South Asians, Parents, LGBTQ+ and the Mental Wellness communities gave me so much joy. I especially benefited from the Mental Wellness community group during my most recent depressive episode. The honest, bare conversations over Zoom are seared in my soul. Sharing my heart in a work messaging channel and seeing the messages of support that followed, told me I was not alone in this journey. The Affirm community has played a key part in getting me through the lows. Affirm has been an incredible place to lean into my career again, and above all, I have found a place where I belong. I recommend to anyone in their career journey seeking an inclusive and uplifting work environment to really consider Affirm. You might just find everything you've ever hoped for. https://lnkd.in/g3Abtq7E #diversitymatters #diversityintheworkplace #inclusion
