Starting any new business is difficult, and that’s especially true in the legal industry. Nevertheless, it’s a position that a lot of attorneys find themselves in. Here is my advice to find success as a solo practitioner:
First, pick a niche. If your startup firm claims to do everything, then you’ll be competing against everyone else. Instead, find the type of work you’re most passionate about and focus on that.
Next, stay on top of new legal tech. Embracing technology from the beginning will make your firm more efficient, agile, and competitive. If you want to compete with the larger law firms, you have to run yours differently.
Finally, put customer service first. This is perhaps your greatest advantage when running a smaller firm. You can create much closer relationships with your clients than a large firm ever could.
Like I said, starting a law firm isn’t easy, but it can be very rewarding if you succeed. Have you ever considered starting your own firm? Let me know in the comments.
