“On average, women earned 83 cents for every man's dollar in 2020, with that gap widening for women of color. The disparity grows as women ascend the executive ranks.
According to recent research, director-level women make 71% of what a man makes in an equivalent position, and just 55% of what a man makes in VP roles. Women in the C-Suite of S&P 500 earned 75% of what their male counterparts made in 2020, which is the widest pay gap since 2012.”
I cringe when I hear people talking about “getting back to normal” or “the new normal.” As if you can ever really go backwards. As if “normal” is a healthy or useful way of being in the first place. So my attention was piqued when I read “… you can’t assume you’ll return to the same culture that existed prepandemic. There’s been too much change, both at the individual level and at the business level.” My immediate reaction: it's about time!
As someone who has worked in hybrid settings across geographies for many years, pre pandemic, I'm relieved and excited about the current momentum around rethinking the workplace and how we work. Brooke Weddle says, "In-office interaction can be well thought out, just like an off-site. Going in for the sake of going in—I think those days are over. People understand now that we can be wildly productive—at home. We need to incentivize people to come back for a specific purpose, and to drive toward a specific outcome." As someone who has routinely had a two hour round trip commute to work, this notion warms my heart.
The question of how leaders can think differently, model behaviors and also be creative about how we replicate serendipitous interactions, facilitate cross-functional collaboration, and generate energy and inspiration is challenging for sure. I'm interested to learn more about what others are doing ...
