Kate Malmgren, a sustainability, green building, and ecology specialist, is making waves in the environmental management and ecological consultancy space. Malmgren holds a Master of Science (MS) degree in Marine and Coastal Systems from Universidade do Algarve and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Environmental Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz. The status quo in workplace design leaves most occupants disconnected from nature. Biophilia, our innate human affinity for nature, can be leveraged to promote wellbeing, creativity, and productivity. A biophilic design approach can also foster employee attraction and retention. While an early movement towards biophilic design is happening, many have not fully grasped how integrating nature in the built environment makes financial sense too. Rationale and research will illustrate how biophilic design can revolutionize the workplace to support wellbeing, staffing, and retention.
