In The Provocation, Ewan McIntosh expresses it well when he writes:

"Doing real strategy is hard, though, because you're going to annoy someone on the way. Someone is going to be unhappy. Someone will believe they've not been heard, that their view hasn't been taken on board. That's why most schools do fake strategy - it's really just rearranging the deckchairs and avoiding making any genuine choices."

The words that resonate deeply with me are 'fake strategy'. Too often, I've seen school personalities put a lot of energy into strategies to keep the status quo and to keep their privilege. It might be an attitude of 'this is how we have always done it', or they opt instead for safety and security in old systems, avoiding potential conflict, restricting the school from growth and innovation for students, especially marginalized students.

I am now reading Becoming a Totally Inclusive School by Angeline Aow, @Dr Stephen M Whitehead, and Sadie Hollins, and I am reminded of how some identities have been valued more than others. Strategically, Total Inclusion will require self-reflection (requiring us to look at who we are) and the ability to not only tolerate but embrace this 'strategic tension'.

As McIntosh points out, true strategy isn't about making everyone comfortable; it's about making choices that matter, even if they ruffle some feathers along the way.

So, who among us is willing to embrace strategic tension to discover better ideas?

Who is ready to push beyond the status quo and make bold decisions that could lead to meaningful change? Especially to become a Totally Inclusive School.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences on this.
