“The Best April Fool’s Ever” That’s how I’d describe it. 26 years ago today I started my career in animation. I didn’t mean to. I certainly didn’t know it would end up being a “career”. I just started. On SPACE JAM (og). I didn’t have an education in filmmaking, in animation, or in “Hollywood”. I’d been trained as a stage manager – and with that experience, a pocketful of grit, passion, and the ignorance of innocence, I took a job in a field that has become my life’s work.
I’ve always thought that starting on “April Fool’s Day” was fitting. I certainly thought I must be fooling everyone since in my head I didn’t have the “experience” necessary to be effective in this new-to-me medium. Of course, in hind-sight, joke’s on me: turns out most of life is (or should be) taking advantage of opportunities whether you’re ready or not and then just working your a** off.
The great poet Shel Silverstein said it best: “Listen to the mustn’ts child. Listen to the don’ts. Listen to the shouldn’ts, the impossibles, the won’ts. Listen to the never-haves – then listen close to me: anything can happen child. Anything can be.”
I celebrate this day of tom-foolery and I celebrate some of the amazing people I started this journey with 26 years ago - Ron Tippe, Melissa Kurtz, Jill Ragaway, Tony Cervone and my amazing husband, Eric Swanborg
