Those of us who have the means can redirect vacation destinations, storm-proof our homes, beef up our insurance, and ultimately migrate to safer, milder climes. But much of the world cannot. For many it’s hard to find the resources, let alone the hope we need to build resilience before it's too late. ⏰
That’s why climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe wrote the book "Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World." As Katharine told me in a recent interview, "It’s not about saving the planet, it's about saving us." Nature will adapt. We may not. 🌎
Sound hopeless? I feel you, but stay with me… There are so many amazing people all over the world working together to develop powerful solutions, including Katharine, and her friend Patricia Solis, a geographer at Arizona State University studying resilience and helping people prepare for climate-induced disasters.
I first learned about Patricia from Katharine Hayhoe's phenomenal newsletter "Talking Climate." (link below) 📰 ✍
In 2019, Patricia Solis and her team discovered that while mobile homes account for 5 percent of housing in Maricopa County, they were responsible for 39 percent of indoor heat deaths. They took their findings to the state house and ultimately convinced elected officials to issue a new law preventing landlords from denying tenants the right to install air conditioners and other cooling measures.
As Patricia says: “This is an inspiring example of what can happen when you work on the issues that come from the community with the community.”
I got to experience that community first hand back in 2021 when I interviewed a team of Patricia’s peers at ASU for the Made In America episode: “How America’s Hottest City is Handling the Heat," and it's encouraging to see the evolution of their work and its crossover with Patricia’s and Katharine’s.
