When I first saw the buzz about OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT, I went through five stages of reaction, kind of like five stages of grief.

Scroll through to experience all five: 1. AGAIN? 2. WHY NOW? 3. HOW COOL! 4. STOP THE DOOMSDAY! 5. WHAT'S NEXT?

  1. AGAIN?!?! One thing about being in digital tech is that every January there is some product launch which creates massive industry buzz. Most of the buzz has absolutely nothing to do with an assessment of the product and everything to do with how much money it will make. Sort of like how Underpants Gnomes behave, if you know what I mean.

  2. WHY NOW?!?! It's January, so it's time. One observation, though. Products which make the big splash and cause all the discussion about monetizable use cases are usually already in widespread use. Sophisticated output powered by AI and behavioral data science has been doing incredible things for years in science and medicine. We’ve also been using it for several years to obtain services via chat from our favorite online vendors. It’s a product launch that spurs the talk.

  3. HOW COOL!!! Although I don’t know that I 100% buy OpenAI’s claim that its mission is to “ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity,” I do like to see more science-minded organizations whose past work has shown consideration of long game implications offering products to the public. Microsoft’s investment announcement was also interesting. This is a company experienced in offering b to b and b to c products across a spectrum and a company which continues to reinvent itself. And the whole thing was deftly rolled out.

  4. ARE YOU KIDDING WITH THE DOOMSDAY? The volume of doomsday content this specific launch has generated is insane. AI has been ready to  assemble fact statements and even derive new ones for ages. The risks associated with AI are known questions which extend beyond chatting.

  5. WHAT'S NEXT? The first is that this is a great opportunity to think as marketplace participants about what really matters to us. Do we want the lowest common denominator or the quickest or most obvious option? Have we learned nothing from FaceBook about how those values play out? (Let's not frantically fast follow, Bard, ok?) Let's think about the value of really smart, productive AI coupled with all kinds of input you won’t find in chatbots. What makes an idea original, impactful or creative? How does data interplay with other aspects of lived experience to create new things? Let's use our learnings and responsible science. For those of us in the digital ad industry, how do we think proactively about customer and brand friendliness and consider secure and humane application? For more on how to do this, watch for posts from my profile in a few weeks!
