📣 The Fintech rumour mill 📣
Many Fintechs will breath a sigh of relief as rumours circulate that the PSR intend to reduce reimbursement thresholds from £415K to £85K. The previous £415K was seen as something that put the sector at risk, with Fintechs in particular concerned that such a threshold could bankrupt them!
This could be good news for many. But for the vast majority, the challenge lies in tackling the high volume, low value fraud - and we see this day in day out in our data (the attackers are relentless) - curious as to how much impact the threshold change will really have?
With the October 7th deadline fast approaching there is no slowing down..

📣 The Wolfsberg Group's latest Statement on Effective Monitoring for Suspicious Activity challenges the industry to think differently about how we monitor for suspicious activity today & be proactive in the development of innovative techniques and technologies 📣
Key messages:
❗Current approaches have resulted in substantial increases in SAR/STR volumes globally. Yet, no reliable evidence shows a proportionate increase in highly useful info for govt agencies or a material reduction in FinCrime
❗The industry needs to pivot towards a true risk-based approach, which involves a move away from prescriptive rules-based controls & towards higher-value, quality outputs ❗A rethink on effectiveness is needed to make a step change - focusing on the measurement of effectiveness, targeting outputs, harnessing new technology & embracing innovation are the key to this
The Group shared their thoughts on targeting and measuring effectiveness, innovation & enabling factors. A few points very much align with the approaches taken by RAI & our customers:
✔ Aiming for 100% recall, or ‘No SAR/STR left behind’, is likely to lead to an ineffective system. Sacrificing some past cases can help predict higher value outputs in the future. —> From experience, this can sometimes be really uncomfortable for firms but there is huge benefit in not looking for perfection in a single scenario, rather a holistic, layered approach to detection ✔ Having scenarios in place that have never resulted in any investigation or meaningful outcomes is not effective. Leverage data on the productivity of monitoring controls as well as the demonstrated value of SARs/STRs filed when deciding whether to continue or stop activities is key ✔ Input data should incorporate not only transactional data, customer static data & internal lists, but also other dynamic behavioural customer information e.g. device ID, IP addresses. There is massive value in this data for more effective and targtted detection ✔ Advanced & dynamic segmentation (rather than static segments) results in identifying patterns in behaviour in lower-level segments, improves performance & accuracy of detection models & reduces FPs ✔ Material benefit can be realised from exploratory work for new scenarios, challenger models & below the line testing
