Katie Andrews

Systems Architect at The Nature Conservancy

Katie Andrews is a Systems Architect at The Nature Conservancy's California Chapter. She applies geospatial technologies to address dynamic water management and other conservation issues.1 With nearly 20 years of experience in geographic information systems, spatial analyses, remote sensing, and GPS technology, Katie manages the development of mobile and web-based tools to improve information access for decision makers.1

Katie's current work includes:

  1. A project using machine learning and remote sensing to characterize shallow wet conditions for shorebird habitat.1
  2. Implementing dynamic strategies to ensure migrating birds have access to foraging habitat.1
  3. Monitoring habitat conditions in near real-time using remotely sensed imagery.1

Before joining the Conservancy, Katie worked for the Bureau of Land Management. She holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies from the University of Kansas and an M.S. in Geography from the University of Utah.1

Katie has also collaborated with Upstream Tech to monitor compliance for TNC's BirdReturns program, which compensates farmers for flooding rice fields to provide migratory bird habitat.2 This collaboration led to the development of a platform using satellite imagery to detect field flooding, significantly improving the program's efficiency and scalability.2
