Katie Loovis is a dedicated and dynamic executive with a remarkable history of service across various sectors including government, business, and nonprofit organizations. With over 20 years of experience, she has expertly navigated the complexities of strategic communications and government affairs, making a significant impact on communities at both the national and local levels. Currently serving as the Vice President of External Affairs at The Chamber For a Greater Chapel Hill-Carrboro, Katie has cultivated a career centered around enhancing lives through meaningful partnerships and progressive initiatives.
Her legacy of leadership is evident in her extensive board affiliations, which include a prominent role as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for 9/11 Day, where she contributes to the observance of national remembrance and service. Katie also engages with influential bodies like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation Center for Corporate Citizenship and the UNC Educational Foundation (The Rams Club). Notably, she represented the United States as a delegate in 2012 for a U.S. Department of State-sponsored program to Israel and the West Bank, reflecting her commitment to global engagement and mutual understanding.
In her local community, Katie is deeply involved in several organizations aimed at fostering education, workforce development, and support for small businesses. She holds leadership roles on numerous boards, such as the Durham Tech Foundation, where she serves as Committee Chair, and the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership, representing the local business community. Her proactive involvement in these initiatives demonstrates her dedication to driving economic growth and enhancing educational opportunities for all.
As an accomplished professional, Katie holds an MPA and a BA in Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she also co-captained the NCAA Division I Women’s Lacrosse Team. Demonstrating ongoing dedication to her field, she is currently pursuing her doctorate in Community College Leadership at North Carolina State University, while also sharing her expertise as an adjunct faculty member at UNC. Her academic endeavors are paired with a professional passion for nonprofit management that further informs her leadership style and approach.
Katie's commitment to public service is complemented by her achievements in athletics, including her role as the captain of the USA Under-19 Women’s Lacrosse Team, which earned a silver medal in the world championship in 1995. This spirited involvement in sports illustrates her understanding of teamwork and leadership both on and off the field. Additionally, she is a certified Six Sigma Yellow Belt, demonstrating her analytical skills and commitment to operational excellence.
Outside of her professional and community engagement, Katie is known for her green thumb, having earned the title of Master Gardener and dedicating her time to cultivating her beautiful four-acre property filled with native trees and plants. Living in the scenic 'Blue Heaven' region of North Carolina, she finds joy in nurturing both her garden and her local community.
