R.I.PLEATS

In August, the fashion world and NYC's Garment District lost one of its finest and most revered craftsmen. Leon Kalajian, the owner and master pleater of Tom's Sons International Pleating, passed away. He was 87 years old.

Leon was the mastermind behind some of the most intricate pleating patterns in the industry. The company has supplied luxury fashion and ready to wear companies, including Oscar de la Renta, JASON WU, and BRANDON MAXWELL. It also works with upstarts, including Palmier. Industry observers put the creativity and quality of Tom's Sons pleating on par with Maison Lognon, the CHANEL- owned pleating company that dates to 1853.

George Kalajian, one of two sons, took over his family’s business in 2010. He transformed it from being a manufacturer of pleated ready to wear to being a supplier of pleated and embellished materials for fashion and other industries. He has worked to dissect, learn and preserve his father’s knowledge of fabrics and pleating in order to keep it in the company’s braintrust.

I've visited Tom’s Sons International Pleating on West 36th Street a few times in recent years for research. A tiny room houses archives including pieces from the former rtw line. There are stacks of cardboard molds also known as pleating boards. Hand-pleating involves placing treated fabric between two layers of folded paper board to create pleats -  as if you were laying down material between two accordion fans. There are cutting tables, pleating machines, refrigerator-sized heaters, bolts of fabric, and racks on which treated fabric is hung to dry. Each visit, I saw Leon Kalajian working methodically in near silence with an assistant, spreading fabric across a mold, placing weights and industrial clips to keep everything in place, and quietly scrunching the accordion of cardboard and fabric together. Tom’s Sons was named for George’s grandfather, Thomas -  whose sons were Leon, Jack and Anthony. The business started in Lebanon in 1931 and the company distributed pleated separates throughout the Middle East. The family’s history in textiles dates to the 19th century when members were master silk weavers in Turkey, Lebanon and Lyon, France.

The passing of Leon Kalajian marks a challenge faced by family companies trying to move forward after the loss of their leader. For Tom’s Sons, it highlights the fragility of craftsmanship, the need to preserve, and the necessity to attract new generations to the field. Anyone can get cheap pleated polyester made in Asia, but inexpensive imports can never match the intricacy of what is handmade in the US or Europe.

New York City is home to scores of fashion designers and suppliers. There are amazing people making things by hand here. May Leon, and George in his footsteps, be an example of what magic can be done by hand and inspire others to follow suit. #GarmentDistrict #MadeInNewYork #fashion #craftsmanship
