UNTOLD STORY OF THE KALIMPONG KIDS

  • Possibly the darkest blotch of colonial TEA history is the well-kept secret of Kalimpong Kids.

In the early 20th century, 100+ young Anglo-Indians were sent to New Zealand in an organized migration scheme from Kalimpong, in the Darjeeling district of India. They were the mixed-race children of British tea planters and local women and were placed as workers with New Zealand families from the Far North to Southland. Their settlement in New Zealand was the initiative of a Scottish Presbyterian missionary, the Rev Dr. John Anderson Graham, who aimed to ‘rescue’ and provide a home and an education for children whose opportunities would have been limited in the country of their birth.

In New Zealand they would be placed as household and farmworkers with Presbyterian families known to the scheme’s founder; from this protective setting, they would leave behind the stigmas of race, illegitimacy, and institutionalization, blending into a reputedly egalitarian society unburdened by concerns about racial purity. They would forget India, their birth families, and the traumas of separation, attaching instead to settler-colonial communities. In time, and over generations, their shameful beginnings would be entirely lost and the racial hiccup bred out.

This is the story of the forgotten Kalimpong Kids. A dark blotch on the colonial tea history of India, a well-preserved secret that I chanced upon on my many visits to the tea districts of Darjeeling & Kalimpong.
