Here's something I never really expected to say: Today, I'm launching Verso, an AI strategy consultancy for newsrooms and nonprofits, with my friend and talented colleague Patrick Swanson.

For the past year, the two of us have been at the intersection of AI and journalism: We attended the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships at Stanford, where we studied, experimented, and collaborated with CS students to prototype AI tools for journalists and editors. After a decade of reporting on tech, privacy and AI, it was a thrill to get up close from the other side.

We spoke with dozens of reporters, editors, and newsroom leaders who are juggling the promise of a powerful new technology, the crazy hype attached to it, and the grave risks it brings along. So when the fellowship ended, even though we'd intended to go off and find new, normal jobs, we decided we weren't ready to drop this thread.

We've already led six AI workshops: three in the U.S. and three in Vienna, where Patrick's from. We're also working with clients to help them design their AI strategy, construct ethical AI principles, and prototype custom AI tools that solve their specific problems.

It's been really rewarding to venture off and build something new. I'm really grateful for the generous advice we've gotten along the way from people like Alberto B Mendoza, Pam Maples, Dawn Garcia, Djordje Padejski, Tran Ha, and Andrew McGill.

You can see more about what we do at verso.ink, and contact the two of us at [email protected]. If you'd like to work together, please get in touch!

In this age of superstar cities, 25 bustling metros account for half the country's economy. But some less talked-about cities and rural areas are quietly prospering.
