Earlier this year, I was honored to be elected as Co-Chair of the Seattle Arts Commission, working alongside fellow arts advocates (including my dear friend and co-chair Holly Jacobson!) to support Seattle’s incredible arts community.

And today, we need your help.

Funding for Seattle’s Office of Arts and Culture is at risk. The Mayor’s Office is considering redirecting critical funding from the ARTS Office to other city departments in the upcoming City Budget.

Cuts to the ARTS Office would be devastating for so many organizations who look to ARTS for baseline operating support, for artists who bring creative projects into our neighborhoods, our parks, and our schools. The ARTS office is uniquely positioned to provide this type of direct support to our artists and arts organizations.

Here’s just one example of what’s at stake: The 2024 Youth Arts Grant, open to artists and organizations seeking support for after school programs for middle- and high-schoolers, received 66 applications this year. These were 66 fully developed projects, ready to give young people something creative, powerful, engaging to participate in after school.   But—> funding was only available for 17 projects. 75% of the artists and organizations who were ready and able to provide this valuable service to our city were turned away. And this is the CURRENT STATUS QUO. If the Mayor and Council redirected funding from this office, that would mean even LESS of these types projects could be supported.

In an era where we are desperately trying to reverse trends in loneliness and screen time, to address root causes to devastating social issues, to help people feel hopeful and connected, these types of programs are what we need way more of. To see a list of the hundreds of cultural organizations and artist-led projects that receive support from the Office of Arts and Culture is to read name after name of the places that make Seattle worth living in.

These organizations and artists need us now.

Please, take one minute to send a message to Mayor Harrell and City Council members to RETAIN FUNDING for the Office of Arts and Culture in the 2025-2026 city budget.

This simple form allows you to quickly message city leaders with this core ask. A few hundred people who take the time to do sends a very powerful message. One minute.

On behalf of the Arts Commission—and every kid (and grown-up kid) who will take part in a experience funded by the Seattle’s ARTS office in 2025 and 2026— thank you.
