After a storm comes a rainbow.  One door shuts, another opens.  The Tower is followed by the Star.  Cliches like this are endless because it happens so regularly. Disruption is followed by growth.

My favorite metaphor for this is actually in plants, in that the best growth comes from disturbed soil.  You till before you plant, throwing seeds on undisturbed ground results in lower yields.  Mixing in bullshit when you till creates more fertile ground for growth.

Last week, my 5 years at Scribe Media ended, when I was part of what I deeply hope is the last layoffs we see from them.

I cannot say anything about the #scribelayoff that hasn’t already been said by far more eloquent people than me. The way things ended wasn’t what we were promised. That is a betrayal that I wish I could make right.  The mission of #scribe is still a mission I believe in, and some of my closest friends work there. My dearest wish is that they succeed in creating the Scribe Media that they want it to be and can be proud of.

After all this earth-moving, I’m looking forward to nurturing the growth that comes after. Scribe helped me create an incredible garden bed of experiences, skills, and honed talents. The growth that’s coming is explosive and I’m excited to find a new company to help flourish as I continue to do so.

I’m #Opentowork, looking for Operations Management, Project Management, and Internal Consulting roles, if there is a problem you need solved or a knot you need untangled, I’m truly eager to help!

Have you ever been completely unsurprised, but like, in a really good way?

A few months ago, our CEO, JeVon McCormick, announced that the Exec and Strategy teams were looking into what we could do to support everyone through the inflation and rising cost of living. I trusted immediately that whatever decision they made would be incredible and surpass the ‘expected’ or ‘reasonable’ benchmarks.

So, this month, when he announced that we were giving everyone a permanent 8.3% salary increase to all tribe members, and raising the lowest salary level we have at Scribe by $5k (more than 8.3%) I was overjoyed, in awe, relieved.

Not surprised.

Surprised would mean that this was above and beyond the kind of decision making I’ve experienced from the people I work with.

Don’t get me wrong, I am incredibly thankful. I cried when it was announced, this is making my life easier and more secure in a time when ease and security are at a premium.

This is an extraordinary decision.

But I’ve grown to have a reasonable expectation for the extraordinary.

Was I expecting a permanent 8.3% salary increase for every member of a tribe of over 100 people?

No, of course not.

I did trust that the decision would put people first, be thoughtfully decided, and live up to the values that we all helped craft.

“We will be measured by the difference we made in people’s lives.”

Working at Scribe Media, the difference we’re making is wide spread, but the biggest difference will always be in our own lives, in the lives of our tribe and their families. I am forever thankful to be here, to help and support making that difference.
