Okay, here it is! I attended both Black Hat and DEF CON for the first time EVER this summer! Talk about FOMO, I’ve spent years in this crazy industry hearing the tall tales about these conferences but never had the opportunity to go. This year, that changed. And it was crazy. It was busy, and loud, and intense. I had some great conversations. I got to catch up with some folks I haven’t seen in a while or even years! I got to meet some co-workers in person for the first time, and I got to meet many new faces that I may never see again, but the one exposure was memorable.
I think I was more prepared for Black Hat. It’s closer to events I’ve participated in in the past. But DEF CON was different, way different. I always knew it was a “hacker” conference, but after attending in person, I really lean on the general definition of hacker, as someone who tinkers with things. Whether it’s breaking or building (or both!), the idea is to get your hands dirty, and that’s what DEF CON was. I was overwhelmed at the sheer mass of things to do, and I really wasn’t prepared. Luckily, I had volunteered to help out at the Policy Village ❤️, so between my time volunteering and the other talks I was able to sit in on, I felt like I gained purpose from my time there.
But the truth is, I need to up my game for my next round. So this is my plan:
Make a plan… a real plan. I need to look ahead at the talks and see what strikes me as an area of interest. What revolves around my world, or what’s outside my space but seems interesting? I need to map and schedule those out so I have some purpose and direction. Else, for me, I’ll end up window shopping versus getting in to try stuff on and buy.
In summary, my first time at Black Hat and DEF CON was mostly a success, I’d say. But not the success I was expecting. So here’s to making the next round even better!
On my way, Vegas! I can’t help but wonder how many folks on my flight are headed out for the same events… 🤓 I see you tech swag people.
