Highlights
Are you a fan of Only Murders in the Building? Excited to watch Season 4! In The Wrap’s 2023 issue, I designed a layout featuring Selena Gomez, and I want to share my design intention behind it.
The image captured a sense of calm in motion with an Airstream, so I used a metallic-to-blue gradient in the typography to mirror the tone, embellished with decorative arrows and a heart symbolizing her dynamic yet heartfelt journey—reflecting her opening up about her physical and mental health issues.
Strong yet vulnerable, busy yet grounded, reflecting the ever-changing moods we all experience, much like the sky shifting from blue to gray. I wanted to express that in the typography.
I played with classic serif fonts in oversized letters and mixed all caps and title case, even removing the dot from the “i” in “With” to tightly fill the space.
The hidden message here: Selena Gomez can fill the room.
Her recent Vanity Fair cover, where her image contrasts sharply with the relaxed vibe in my design. It’s fascinating to see how her image evolves with different projects.
On a side note, Watching Only Murders… is particularly nostalgic for me, as it’s set in the Upper West Side, where my first NYC apartment was. From a $550/m rent on the same block as The Dakota to a career in design, life has a funny way of connecting the dots.
