What if the missing piece around AI is simply human initiative?

As AI takes over routine tasks and excels in creative endeavors like ideation, writing and art, it’s easy to expect human workers might be painted into a corner.

But the vast majority of AI efforts (for now, anyway) will require a human to first be curious, ask good questions, and see opportunities to act. In other words, AI requires initiative.

AI will force us to recognize that much of what gets done in the typical workplace is not very valuable (more meetings, anyone?).

And as we seek what is truly valuable, it is not about AI’s capabilities over a human’s. It’s about our willingness to find problems we care about solving, opportunities we want to jump on, and areas we’re excited to pursue - with AI's help. In its purest form, this manifests as our purpose.

And the future belongs to those with a purpose - as the motivation, curiosity and the willingness to act. With that drive, AI becomes our tool, not our replacement.

Most of us yearn for stability and resilience in our work and lives, but we misunderstand how to create it.

Holding things steady and avoiding threats robs us of opportunities and weakens our ability to respond when unpredictability arises.

To make progress in our work and careers, we need to be embracing risks, not avoiding them.

Our often unspoken concerns keep us from trying new ideas and exploring new directions. Fears of upsetting or threatening someone at work, looking like we’ve messed up, or just getting discouraged and second-guessing ourselves all cause us to play it safe.

Pay attention to the internal signals that you're holding back, like a desire to analyze and over-plan before making any real progress, seeking approval or validation, a desire to polish new efforts to perfection before putting them forward or just a resigned commitment to focus on what’s expected of you rather than be curious about what might be possible...
