Amazing what a clear regulatory framework can do for global financial innovation. Exhibit A: "Euro Stablecoin Market Surges Under MiCA."

On July 1, European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) went live and was an immediate gamechanger, reshaping the digital currency landscape by eliminating non-compliant players and fostering a favorable environment for euro-pegged stablecoins.

Under MiCA, stablecoins are classified as electronic money tokens (EMTs), aligning them with traditional e-money and requiring issuers to hold an EMI license or be a credit institution. This regulatory clarity is expected to make the EUR-backed stablecoin market more predictable and attractive to users.

Here's some key stats:

  • Current demand for euro-backed stablecoins: $30 billion
  • Current supply of euro-backed stablecoins: Less than $300 million

Projected market capitalization:

  • 2025: €15 billion
  • 2026: €70 billion
  • 2028: €2 trillion+

The ripple effect of MiCA has had a positive impact outside of the Eurozone as well. Growth in the overall stablecoin market in July was +2.1% up to $164 billion. USDC trading volume increase in July alone: +48%.

Stablecoin is the most consequential structured product devised in the last decade and will be transformative in the next five years. Imagine how the market will look once Congress sets forth a framework for the US stablecoin industry.
