Highlights
One of the things I'm most passionate about these days is the applicability of psychological research and methods to organizational leadership and team culture.
🌟 My favorite right now? The concept of "bids", conceptualized by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, two researchers and clinicians who have studied relationships for decades (and yes, they're married!) Working with countless organizations and teams across the country has led me to see how their idea of "bids," initially developed for understanding marital relationships, holds remarkable potential for improving team dynamics in professional settings.
💡 A "bid" is essentially any attempt from one partner to another for attention, affirmation, affection, or any other positive connection. In a couple’s therapy context, responding positively to these bids fosters trust and strengthens relationships. However, when transferred to the workplace, especially within leadership teams, understanding and responding to bids can be equally transformative.
💥 For leaders, recognizing that each interaction with a team member can be seen as a bid for connection changes the dynamic significantly. These bids might look like a team member asking for feedback, suggesting a new idea, or seeking support on a project. Each of these moments presents an opportunity for leaders to connect, support, and empower their team members.
💭 Responding positively to these bids requires active listening, validation of the team member's contributions, and constructive feedback. It's not merely about acknowledging the bids; it's about engaging with team members in a manner that builds trust and encourages open communication. This approach can lead to a more cohesive and motivated team, as members feel seen, heard, and valued.
☀ The Gottman Method teaches us that the success of relationships—whether personal or professional—often hinges on how these bids are made and responded to. By incorporating this understanding into leadership practices, leaders can create a more inclusive and dynamic environment that not only drives the team forward but also fosters a culture of mutual respect and collaboration.
Let's start seeing these everyday interactions as the "bids for connection" that they are - and how valuable they are as opportunities to strengthen our teams.

I'm so excited to share something I've been working on recently that is a little bit of a departure from my talent work but is something that I've become passionate about. Content heads up that it has to do with motherhood, which I recognize could be activating for some people. Please ignore if that's true for you.
Some personal context: Some of you know that I’ve always wrestled with the question of whether or not I want to take on a different type of "role" in having my own children, assuming I have the ability to do so. In the last few years, that question has become even more present for me - heightened by both the life stage I’m in as well as the societal messages (both explicit and implicit) about motherhood in general.
I’ve talked to a lot of people who are in the same place of questioning, and it made me realize how valuable it is to talk about these questions within a safe and supportive community of others. With that in mind, I decided to create a virtual discussion space for those who are navigating the complexities of deciding whether or not to pursue the path of motherhood.
Details are below, but a quick note that this will be a one-time space at least for now, just to gauge how much interest there is in this type of space. If there’s a desire to keep meeting, we can of course continue forward, but for now, it’s a one-time thing so that there is as low a barrier to entry as possible for those who aren’t sure they can make an ongoing commitment.
Another note about the purpose of this space...
I know that so many of you have had to fight through myriad obstacles to have kids of your own, with a variety of different outcomes. Some of you navigated years of fertility treatments. Some of you found out you don’t have the ability to get pregnant. Some of you adopted children. Some of you decided in the end that you would rather live a childfree life.
Truthfully, we need communities for all of these different types of situations and circumstances, so that no one feels alone - and I hope everyone who needs a space is able to find one. With that said, this particular space is for those of you who, like me, have really wrestled with the question of whether or not to pursue the path of motherhood.
And all that being said...
Motherhood means so many different things to people. I consider myself to be a mother already to my fur babies, Saki & Lumi - and I also know that I provide maternal support and energy to so many others, including my nieces, nephews, friends, and family. However you define motherhood, and however you are wrestling with the question of whether or not to “have kids”, you’re welcome in this space!
