One of the best mental models for how to use LLMs I've seen is that it's an amazing tool for getting from 0 to 1 (I don't recall who first said this, happy to provide a reference if anyone knows).

What does this mean in practice? Well, LLMs shine when you're starting from zero knowledge about a topic and have some initial questions. They're remarkably good at providing that first layer of understanding.

However, I've noticed they're less effective at taking you from 1 to 100 (where 100 represents expert-level knowledge). That journey still seems to require deeper, more traditional forms of study and practice.

Another interesting observation: While LLMs are adept at answering the questions you pose (minor hallucinations aside), they don't always guide you towards the questions you should be asking, especially when you're unaware of what you don't know. You can ask them to suggest questions, of course, but I've found this approach less consistently helpful.

Moreover, I've realized that subtle differences in how you phrase your questions can significantly influence the answers you receive. This can be particularly challenging when you're exploring unfamiliar territory and aren't sure where you stand in the solution space.

What makes an expert an expert is likely not their ability to provide solutions, but their deep internalized understanding of both problem and solution spaces. Any specific punctual solutions to problems are but a consequence of this deep mental representation. So, while LLMs are unquestionably a powerful aid to accelerating one's journey to acquiring expertise, there is still currently no substitute for experience and (learning from) mistakes.

🚀 Anthropic's Prompt Generator: A Quiet Revolution in AI Interaction

A month ago, Anthropic dropped a game-changer: their Prompt Generator.

🔥 Key takeaways:

  • Dramatically lowers the barrier to entry to thoughtful, well-crafted prompts
  • Encapsulates Anthropic's prompting best practices: https://lnkd.in/gkyb5hBB
  • Access it from the Anthropic dashboard (sign-up required)
  • You'll need an API key to access the tool, but it is also open-sourced (!) - check it out yourself

This tool isn't just innovative; it's revolutionary. It democratizes AI interaction, making advanced prompt engineering accessible to all.

Huge props to the Anthropic team for not just advancing the field, but actively working to make it more inclusive. 👏
