Two years ago I hesitated to take the offer at my current company, Airfox, because as I learned in the interview process, the product was aimed at the Brazilian market. "How am I going to be able to contribute?" I asked myself.

This turned out to be one of my most fulfilling working experiences. The company grew from 20ish people when I joined to the present day of about 250. Despite the cultural gaps, the super-fast growth, and the sometimes crazy hours, we bonded like family. We hung out and played card games; we traveled together; we even have our own voice-guitar-flute-viola band!

I now realize: I contribute by bringing my authentic self to the team, and when everyone else chooses to do the same, it's magic: An American team delivering a Brazilian product from zero to acquisition.

Recently we got acquired by one of the biggest Brazilian retailers, ViaVarejo. The new company is unfortunately shutting down the U.S. office. It's sad but it's time to say goodbye. And it's the time for the next chapter!

If you are a recruiter or have an exciting opportunity, please reach out! I am looking for myself and I will also connect you with our get-stuff-done, no-fluff backend and frontend engineers who would otherwise not be looking anytime soon.

A couple of months ago when the VP announced the opening up of the engineering manager position at Airfox where I work, the news didn't even register with me. It was just another item on the list of weekly announcements.

In my conversations with my peers in the weeks that followed, many of my teammates were so supportive of me and asking me about taking on this role. The VP eventually reached out to me about potentially taking on the role as well. It took me some time to really consider what kind of contribution I could make that I currently couldn't. As this role is entirely managerial, it means giving up the thing that I love: designing and creating software with hands-on work on a team.

As of this weekend, I have completed the transition from being a technical team lead and took on fully the engineering manager role at Airfox.

There are many reasons why we love working at Airfox. For me, it's our team's dedication to each other, to grow and to thrive as a community. It's worth giving up what I love to serve this group of amazing human beings.

What is something that you love and is worth giving up because of the people around you?

p.s. Team banQi/Airfox post-COVID meet-up, partially socially distanced. :)
