It is time to value IC’s - not managers
As much as I hate to admit it, I have been in the workplace for a long time. I learned a long time ago that I am an individual contributor (an IC). I have no desire to become a manager or be part of management because I like what I do. People that like what they do and more importantly, are good at it, should continue to do that. Employers should not suggest that a successful career path means moving into management. First of all, in my experience, many managers provide little to no value. They were “promoted” to these positions after being successful as IC’s and take these jobs to “move up”. They have no experience or background in managing people. In reality, they should probably continue the work they were good at and provide mentoring for newer employees to make their employers more successful. Why is it that IC’s - who do a majority of the actual work - are not valued, with both financial compensation and esteem. When will employers realize that businesses can run without middle managers but can't without actual contributors?
