I am highlighting some key takeaways from the interview I did with CNA938 last week, who have kindly archived it on their site now. I’m also sharing a transcript of the interview on my website. Please see: https://lnkd.in/gKRiP82q

The message was aimed towards the general public but it underscores my positions towards the different aspects of digital assets, which can vary widely in characteristics. During the news break Melanie Oliveiro read a headline about the UN highlighting cyber heists from North Korea. It seems that the Lazarus Group has a particular mission on stealing cryptoassets to fund DPRK’s WMD program, which is about as serious as it gets. I wish I could be more positive on crypto sometimes but we have to face up to these issues and make sure they are addressed.

Nonetheless I brought up stablecoins: that XSGD is now accepted by Grab Finance for top ups, and is also being used in Project Orchid, MAS’s pilot project on programmable money. I also shared some use cases from Project Orchid.

  1. Generally speaking I am in agreement with the MAS that cryptoassets are not suitable for retail investors. The vast majority of cryptoassets are not regulated, which does not require them to disclose their internal workings and audits. Cryptoassets are not like stocks, which represent companies with cash flows and business models which have been vetted by an IPO process.

  2. It’s possible for Singaporeans to buy a regulated stablecoin from a regulated crypto exchange now, for an actual, non-speculative use case: payments and savings. As I highlighted in my book also - this is a good way for a beginner to get started and understand how public blockchains work.

  3. I remain optimistic that DeFi can be used for good. There are many innovations in DeFi such as smart contracts, automated market makers, composability and more which can benefit finance as a whole. My thesis and observation is that this innovation ‘jumps over’ into the regulated world. Crypto-native DeFi thus can be a global FinTech sandbox of sorts, driving innovation of this nature.

  4. I think CBDCs should be given a chance, and believe that they can have many benefits to society, which include financial inclusion, greater efficiencies, and a more competitive FinTech ecosystem. Nonetheless surveillance and privacy concerns need to be addressed adequately as well as communicated well to the general public. The execution of CBDCs programs will also vary for different countries and should be taken on a case-by-case basis.
