Ken Winkel

Dr. Ken Winkel is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Population and Global Health at the University of Melbourne and an Honorary Fellow of the University's Medical History Museum.

As a prominent Australian toxinologist, he served as the Director of the Australian Venom Research Unit (AVRU) from 1999 to 2015 before transitioning to one of the world's leading public health institutions.

Dr. Winkel holds a Ph.D. from the Walter and Elisa Hall Institute (WEHI) at the University of Melbourne, an MBBS from the University of Queensland, and other qualifications from the Swiss Tropical Institute and the University of Queensland's QIMR.

He is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Tropical Medicine (ACTM) and actively contributes to the Biodiversity Committee of the Doctors for the Environment Australia.

Throughout his career, Dr. Winkel has been involved in teaching, presenting at various national and international conferences, and publishing numerous papers, garnering over $7 million in research funding since 1996.

His accolades include the Vita Lampada Medal for Excellence in Medical and Health Education and the ACTM Medal for Distinguished Contribution to Tropical Medicine.

Dr. Winkel's specialties include Public Health, Indigenous Health, Biodiversity, Toxinology, Tropical Medicine, Immunology, and Medical History.

Apart from his extensive academic achievements, he has also been a CSL (now Seqirus) consultant on venoms and envenomations and has been actively engaged in various editorial boards and advisory roles in the medical field.
