Kenny Breuer

Kenny Breuer is a Professor of Engineering and Professor of Ecology, Evolution, and Organismal Biology at Brown University.12 He received his ScB from Brown University in Mechanical Engineering (1982) and his PhD from MIT in Aeronautics and Astronautics (1988).14 Breuer is the director of the Center of Fluid Mechanics at Brown University and co-director of the center for the Mechanics of Undersea Science and Engineering (MUSE).2

His research interests are in Fluid Mechanics, covering a wide range of topics including:

  • Animal flight mechanics, particularly bat and bird flight
  • Fluid-structure interactions
  • Vortex dynamics
  • Renewable energy harvesting
  • Bioinspired engineering
  • Micron-scale bio-fluid mechanics123

Breuer is a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).12 He has authored over 100 refereed technical publications and co-authored several books, including "Microscale Diagnostic Techniques," "A Gallery of Fluid Motion," and "Multimedia Fluid Mechanics".1

His work has been featured in various media outlets, including PBS's NOVA, NPR's Science Friday, and the Discovery Channel.2 Breuer has also received several awards, including the Dean's Award for Excellence in Mentoring in Engineering from Brown University in 2020.2
