One milestone to aim for in your interview prep: You should be able to teach what a good answer looks like to a friend, in addition to being able to give a good answer
Start with a PM interview question like “Name a product you use that has a great onboarding experience. What makes it successful?”
It’s one thing to be able to answer the question directly, and talk about an app you use or a piece of hardware you’ve purchased. It’s another thing to be able to unpack and “teach” someone what the interviewer is looking for from candidates.
For a question like this, the company is evaluating your product sense, specifically, if you know concepts like time to value, empty state design, and new user experience. They want to see if you understand what makes a product valuable to the user, how the company manages the relationship with the user, and if you can structure your thinking and talk about the customer relationship and experience at an interaction level, a tactical level, and a strategic level. Also, they'll test your ability to analyze competitors and benchmarks, and explain why certain products outperform others.
And finally, they are testing if you can take all of the above information and communicate it clearly and concisely, using data where possible, to your interviewer. Because communication is a key skill for product management.
So next time you do a practice interview, see if you can respond to the question well AND teach someone what makes a good answer to that question.

The PM hiring landscape is pretty brutal right now :/
I'm running an experiment to help candidates (you?) prep for an upcoming, scheduled interview with a custom prep plan tailored to their needs.
The plans will include things like:
- how to allocate your time
- framework for thinking about the skills they're testing for
- what sort of questions to expect, with examples
- what industry / functional topics to brush up on and now
- other custom topics - which ones? who knows, it will depend on where you're applying!
