Highlights
Recently, I came home from a year of wandering the world and living out of a suitcase. Here are some things I learned.
Life throws unexpected curveballs. What was unexpected was being laid off along with 12,000 other people at Google in March of 2023. So, I decided to rent my house for a year and took off to Southeast Asia.
Some opportunities only present themselves once in a lifetime.
People think it’s a joy ride to go gallivanting across the other side of the world. It might be, but it’s also a stranger in a strange land.
And when you’re doing it as a solo female, who is also processing the grief of losing her father, then a lover, then a job in the span of a year, it takes on a whole lot of other dimensions. Here’s what I learned on that journey:
You don't need much; a minimalist life is a less stressful life Sometimes you have to make hard choices You can make friends anywhere A job gives you a strange sense of meaning; I actually like to work Kindness is everywhere; brief moments with strangers - the monk's blessing in Thailand, the Kafka Cafe in Malaysia, the Omanis in Thailand, the Russian woman helping me get the motorbike off me when I wrecked, Balinese doctors taking care of me in the hospital Your true friends stay true Art is universally present: powerful, beautiful, and provocative There is no place like home; home is where the heart is Adventure changes you; you never come home the same person Perspective can only be gained from a distance You are your own best friend Traveling solo makes you sit with yourself, go inwards, and go deep; when you do, you will find what you are looking for The internet is overrated but connection is paramount Being in flow means going where things lead you Sometimes not knowing the answer is the answer The human language is connection - even with strangers, even in far off places, even without speaking each other's language Walking is good for the soul You can find silence in the din of humanity, it's underneath it all, no matter where in the world you are - the divine is a constant whispering Wherever you go there you are. There’s no outrunning your life The world feels safer in places where there are no guns and the men are smaller than you Going out of your comfort zone generates rebirth You have resources you never knew you had Embrace who you are - if you are a wanderer be a wanderer. Don't fight yourself trying to go against your own grain because it's not conventional When opportunity presents itself, you have to take it on blind faith Sometimes the most uncomfortable and scary things are the things you need to do the most Learning to show up in a state of being versus doing is hard but will change our life You miss strange things in a strange land (pizza delivery, Amazon, and highways) Grief is a solitary and inward journey only you can travel; be kind to yourself along the way Everyone comes out for ocean sunsets the world over
