Kevin Baines

Senior Scientist at University of Wisconsin-Madison, Space Science and Engineering Center

Kevin Baines is a seasoned astronomer with a keen focus on understanding planetary atmospheres, exploring their origin, formation, evolution, and dynamics. His expertise includes conducting astronomical observations of various planets such as Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune using both ground-based telescopes and the Hubble Space Telescope. His analysis of planetary atmospheres involves studying their structure, composition, and winds using UV-near-IR spectroscopic data and imagery from ground-based and spacecraft observations.

Kevin has an impressive track record in planetary research, serving as a Co-Investigator on the Galileo/NIMS Team, where he analyzed Jovian meteorology from the Galileo Jupiter orbiter. He was also a NASA-Selected Cassini/VIMS Team Member, focusing on observing and analyzing storms and dynamical features on Saturn, including the intriguing polar hexagon. Additionally, he led the US Science Team on Venus Express, a European spacecraft orbiting Venus, further showcasing his leadership in planetary exploration.

Kevin Baines is best known for his role as the Principal Investigator of the proposed VALOR Discovery Mission, aimed at flying the first American aircraft in the skies of another planet to unravel the mysteries of Venus. His specialties include developing mission concepts to various planets and analyzing planetary atmospheres. Beyond his work in astronomy, Kevin is an FAA-certified Flight Instructor with expertise in instrument and multi-engine flight, and a Cirrus-endorsed CSIP instructor for Cirrus aircraft.

Kevin pursued his education in Physics and Astronomy, holding a Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College. He has held key positions at esteemed institutions, currently serving as a Senior Scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Space Science and Engineering Center. Previously, he held the role of Principal Scientist at both CalTech/JPL and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, reflecting his extensive experience in the field of planetary science.
