I’m happy to share that I’ve started my Master's degree in Human Computer Interaction at State University of New York at Oswego!

TL: DR- I’m looking for a new opportunity. If you have any leads for UX, archives, or writing related openings please let me know. I would also love any help or advice that you might be able to offer.

I’ve been reticent about posting about this because asking for help doesn’t really come naturally to me. But July 13th marked a year since I was let go from my job. Since then a lot has happened and I’m still trying to find my next role. I haven’t reached out to many in my LinkedIn network so I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try.

I spent nearly a decade working as an archivist/oral historian at a non-profit before deciding to pivot my career into the field of User Experience (UX) during the pandemic. I got a UX Design certification and found my first role as a UX Researcher but was let go after 8 months.

Losing my job was devastating. But in a lot of ways it was a blessing. A month prior to being let go, my grandmother had a stroke that took away her ability to speak and care for herself. I was able to spend a lot of time with her before her passing in February. Then I was able to take my time to grieve.  I know people say this a lot but all of this made it even more clear to me that spending time with people you care about is more important than anything else because you never know when they won’t be around anymore and the effects that will have on you. Maybe some things happen for a reason; I got to spend time with my grandmother that I might not have otherwise been able to.

I was going to say “after I finished grieving” but then I realized maybe you never finish you just need to do a little less of it as time goes on. That being said, I also took some time to take a real mental health break and reevaluate my life and goals. In my personal life, I was able to check something off my bucket list; I took lessons and finally learned how to swim. In terms of my career goals, I came to the conclusion that I still wanted to pursue a career in the field of UX because it still allows me to talk to people, learn about them and their problems, and then find ways to solve them rather than be a bystander like I was as an archivist. I want to become more versatile in the field of UX and not be relegated to only research because of my background and experience so I applied to a master’s program for Human Computer Interaction at SUNY Oswego and was accepted; I start a remote program in the fall.

That being said, I am still looking for a job because I want to work while pursuing my master’s degree. I feel like I’m a bit on the older end of job seekers and don’t want to take a two-year hiatus from the market and also, I need to pay my way through school. I would love to be able work in the field of UX while I grow into it but also wouldn’t mind something else that would allow me to build my skill set or even use the ones I already have. Thanks for hearing me out and also in advance for any help or leads; I really appreciate it.
