Sobering piece from Laura Meckler looking at formative assessment data from NWEA, Curriculum Associates and Renaissance Learning. Most students are behind pre-pandemic levels and not catching up. Lots of reasons this may be true - chronic absenteeism, staffing challenges, etc.

The path forward has to include two component parts. 1) A national commitment to return each sub-group of students to pre-pandemic learning levels at a minimum, complete with a commitment to collect and report on all the necessary data to track this progress. 2) Implementation of instructional strategies backed by evidence. For Accelerate, the focus is on high-dosage tutoring at scale. But we also need to step on the gas on other evidence-backed strategies (tier one curricular alignment around science of reading, stronger math HQIM, etc.).

I understand that there is a lot on the national consciousness right now. But students with lower academic skills heading toward a higher-skill world of work = a slow motion train wreck.

Great piece by Thomas Toch and Liz Cohen on the potential of high dosage tutoring to chart a path to higher achievement if we invest. Lots of key people in this space cited, including past and current Accelerate partners like National Student Support Accelerator, Teach For America, Great Oaks, Reading Futures, Air Tutors, University of Chicago Education Lab. Toch and Cohen call attention to the seminal research of Andre Nickow; Accelerate's Matthew P. Steinberg and Luke Kohlmoos built on that study recently with analysis that included efficiency metrics. So much important work happening in the field, and we need the public sector to keep funding it and moving forward. https://lnkd.in/eKBBUErC
