For many of us, this is performance review time. Over my long career (hope you like my throwback pic), I’ve had many quality development conversations – and a few I’ve found lacking.

I recently shared an example of the latter with employees at the Bank, recalling that early in my career (elsewhere), my manager stopped me in the hall to ask how things were going.

“Good!" I said “Glad to hear it!” he responded, with a fist bump. “Keep it up!”

And that was my annual review! I learned a good lesson that day from a not-so-good manager.   Strong performers, struggling performers and everyone in between benefit from clear and honest feedback. Ideally, feedback is part of an ongoing dialogue, something that happens in the moment as well as in formal reviews.

Such conversations are a critical sign of respect. As a manager, I owe it to my people to put time and thought into assessing their strengths and shortcomings, and to provide feedback in a timely and specific manner all year. I want them to succeed, and I want to be a partner in that success. I sincerely hope they show me the same courtesy.

Those moments of honest dialogue, when someone takes the time to genuinely help you see things you may have missed when looking in the mirror…well, they’re golden. I’ll take those moments over a fist bump any day of the week.
