Highlights
So excited that after ~3 month break, I started a new role as a Sr. Risk Analyst at eBay. The past few months have been a blessing as I got nice recharge time and take a step back to think through my goals in life. Navigating the current job market is also a challenge, but for those who are still in it, just remember that there is a role out there for you and it will come soon!
Through these 3 months, I have a few learnings/insights to share for those who are still in the job market or want some job-hunting wisdom:
-
Leverage your network - You probably read this a million times. Utilizing your network is probably one of the strongest ways to land a new job. It is especially powerful if your referral can personally vouch for your work. Your referrer’s word is very strong and can put you on top of the pile! Don’t be afraid to reach out, the 30 seconds it takes for you to say hi could jumpstart your next job. If it doesn't, you at least caught up with an old friend.
-
Showcase and understand your expertise and value - This is especially important. I was overwhelmed with imposter syndrome during interviews. One thing that can make you a better candidate is to realize that every task you did (no matter big or small) is a huge achievement to others. It is important that you showcase all your skills and experience that you’ve had. The chances are that they are looking for someone with the same exact experience and skills that you have.
-
Grit - I read a book called Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, and it highlights that the one thing that successful athletes do well is their grit and never giving up despite all the failures and rejections they received. One thing that helped me was constant reminders that you are enough and that every failure (or rejection) is feedback on how to do better next time. I took those lessons and fine tuned for my next interview or application.
As for my next steps? I’m super excited to be back in the risk management world and make an impact helping eBay to continue to enable and empower their community to do business globally. Stay tuned for more updates!
As like many ex-Meta workers, today's the day that I got the email to lay me off after an impressive "almost" 3 year run at Meta.
I've been very grateful for everyone that I've met and all the experiences I've gained from working at such a huge tech company. I will forever hold those lessons with me close to heart.
For everyone else that is affected, I wish you all best of luck and I'm excited (just like myself) of everyone's future endeavors.
It's been a while, but I'm also excited to mark myself as "open for work"! Cheers to all the great work everyone did, and let's make even bigger impact in the world!
