Highlights
The hype generated during the 2020 World Economic Forum leaves little room for hope ... unless there are fundamental changes to the way we measure and reward business performance. If #consciouscapitalism is the way forward, as so many CEOs proclaim, we must stop confusing current accounting standards with accountability and refrain from making empty PRomises that amount to nothing more than disingenuous PR.
Personally, I believe #consciouscapitalism is the way forward. And I’m convinced that a genuine shift in mindset and behavior is needed. Profit with purpose, an organizational culture that enables employees to thrive and develop their full potential while achieving agreed-upon performance objectives, managers and leaders who continuously cultivate their “soft skills” and serve others, and a full-blown commitment to work hand-in-hand with stakeholders in and outside of the organization are required.
We have a long way to go before our balance sheets reflect this healthy equilibrium. To that end, it’s essential we distinguish headlines from headway, sucking-up from sustainable success. New performance metrics are in order and time is of the essence. The future is now!
Google and its likes: the antithesis of #ConsciousCapitalism. A complete abuse of power. No wonder we call it antitrust! Bigger is not always better. Progress counts! Hats off to Margrethe Vestager, the European Union’s commissioner for competition, and her team. May the states of the U.S. Union be so inspired.
