We are all cyborgs now. AI is augmenting human intelligence and imagination. But technology is amoral; how societies regulate, respond and utilise technologies depends on our social and political institutions.

Over the past years I have often thought that the dominant narratives and policy settings need more social and public imagination. During Covid, I was gobsmacked at how handouts were lazily given with little thought into how this public finance could have supported social agendas. Or in the context of economics: the doctrine of competitive advantage still dominates international trade policy. The result is that Australia digs up lithium and exports the product for others to make into batteries (we capture 0.05% of the value; as opposed to 80% of the value if we made batteries in Australia). We need political and social imagination to harness new narratives, test new theories and experiment with new models of value creation.

Economic futures is one are - we could also turn our social and political imagination to our food systems, circular economies, education systems, and urban planning, too.

For all these reasons and more, it was a pleasure to read this book by Geoff Mulligan, Another World is Possible. An inspiration and library of ideas that I hope to continue working with in the networks that bring ideas to life. Dr Richard Owens FRSA David Kaldor Nicole Barling-Luke Kate Goodwin Katy Cooper International Futures Forum (IFF) UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures Regen Melbourne
