AI marketing was better back in 1985.

The tech has advanced, but our understanding of what people actually want has not.

We're badly missing the point with websites and messaging that talk about how great the tech is and how it can do your job better than you can, not how it can make you better in your job. Especially in jobs that require the most human skills of all—critical thinking and creativity.

Yesterday I was served a YouTube ad from Asana whose tagline was "With Asana, AI isn't a tool. It's a teammate."

This is exactly what people don't want to hear.

Other startups like 11x are launching "AI Workers" / "digital employees" that can quickly reach thousands of prospects, and just as quickly burn bridges with them. A Wyoming politician experimented with using an automated voice to call thousands of constituents. Almost everyone hung up the second the voice said they were AI-generated.

Some people are going to take a hard line and say there are places AI shouldn't go. While some version of an "AI worker" is inevitable, we have the power right now to shape what that means and what we want that to mean for society.

AI could unlock the 4-day workweek for everyone. AI can let us spend more time on poetry and art. AI can make companies more money than ever, if they don't end up turning everybody off first.

Some of the lines from this 1985 ad for this "state-of-the-fun" robot actually nail it:

“Omnibot…is the robot with a mind all of your own.” (this is a freaking killer tagline, you heard it here first)

"...high technology serves its highest purpose: You." (another banger)

"Of course, he's always open to self-improvement." (humility will go far in AI branding)

Let's not get caught up in competing on features and tech (which is only getting more ubiquitous) when the real opportunity is to compete on brand.

LinkedIn killed the AI prompts ✦ that were showing up under every single post (at least on my feed).

You know why? Because it was dumb.

It forced AI into the experience for the novelty, not the function.

Here are the LinkedIn features I DO want, though:

  1. AI search so I can type things like "who do I know that works for a VC firm?" "people in my network who have experience in machine learning" or "connections who have switched from product marketing to brand"

  2. AI networking suggestions, not just "People who also follow Slack" 🙄 or "People from that random group you joined like 12 years ago and aren't active in"

  3. Profile preview when I hover over someone tagged in a post (please!)

  4. Typing a colon to pull up emojis, like :sunglasses:
