“Your coworkers are not your family” is a common sentiment I hear these days. And to some extent, I agree.
Yet, if you are lucky, you can be blessed by becoming family with select few coworkers.
15 years ago, I had the blessing of getting to know Tonya Coursey at my first real job, when I was newly married and new to Georgia.
For the three years I worked with Tonya at Superior Essex, she became my family. She took me under her wing and made me feel known, even welcoming me to her house on several occasions.
I learned the most about Tonya on our almost daily walks together, but mostly, I learned from her. I loved that she didn’t take crap from anybody and stood up for herself. She loved her family dearly and talked about them often.
It has been 12 years since I left the Georgia area, but we stayed in touch on social media. Tonya took the time to call me a few months back. We caught up on life, just as we had on walks past. I was grateful to hear her voice, receive her love and hear that she was truly happy for life that my family had created.
I don’t know if I knew it’d be our last exchange before she passed, but I am so grateful that I was able to tell her how important she has been in my life and the impact she had on shaping me as a coworker, leader, and mother.
To Tonya’s family, I share my deepest condolences.
Tonya, I love you dearly, my friend. I pray that you rest in peace.
