- The problem is urgent! 77% of climate scientists just surveyed by the Guardian believe we can expect at least a 2.5℃ rise.
- Our future is volatile - floods, fires, climate migration and political instability will upend our existing food sources and supply chains.
- We need population-level change on big impact solutions.
- Plant-rich diets are are the second most impactful way we can reduce emissions after food waste.
- $14B of capital has gone into plant-based companies over the last decade trying to reduce meat consumption.
- Over the last 20 years, meat consumption is up 58% and growing at 2x the rate of population growth.
- Meat substitutes have only captured 1.2% of the animal meat market.
- Why? Let's go deeper than taste, cost and health.
- Great landings (technically sound products) but at the wrong airport (selling on sustainability and stopping meat), when the mainstream loves meat so much, they actually identify with it.
- To reach the mainstream and change behaviour, we need to offer incentives and consider how fast that change can occur.
- The "health by stealth" sodium reduction strategy is an excellent model used by the UK government and Unilever over the past 20 years.
- In fact, many beloved meat products sold widely to meat lovers everywhere already contain anywhere from 18%-85% meat - done to reduce costs!
- Perhaps it's time for an Innovate > Reduce > Innovate strategy in everyday meals with the next generation of proteins.
- Two examples where we are helping our customers in Food Manufacturing and Food Service do exactly this - high quality protein at an affordable price in the everyday meals we all love to eat.
