To follow up on my previous post about pricing constantly being driven down in the #translationindustry...here's a story from this morning.

I received an automated email from one of the #industryleaders for a 9000+ word project of #MTPE of a patient-facing document, with over 6000 of those words being "new words". The offered rate for the project was 200 USD. The turn around was tight.

I didn't even have time to review the project information in the email and click the link (note: I had no intention of claiming the project, I just wanted to see if it was still available) and it was already snatched up.

Someone was willing to claim this project (presumably without negotiating) at a rate that works out to LESS than 0.03 USD/word.

Now, I understand that everyone's circumstances are different and the environment out there is difficult for many, to put it lightly, so perhaps the 200 USD project fee was enticing enough. Or perhaps the person who accepted the (offensively) low rate is just starting out in their career and trying to gain more experience. There is no way to know.

But if we as #languageprofessionals and #translators are willing to be undervalued for our work, then the large agencies out there that sell a product that they cannot produce without us will simply continue offering these unprofessional rates.

I do not have a solution to this problem...not by a long shot. But we need to shed light on it. All of us who fall under the umbrella of language professionals deserve better.
