Founder & CTO at Blue Sky Analytics
Kshitij Purwar is the Founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Blue Sky Analytics, a climate-tech startup that leverages satellite data and artificial intelligence to develop environmental monitoring and climate-risk assessment products. He co-founded the company in 2018 alongside his sister, Abhilasha Purwar, with the mission of combating climate change through data-driven insights.
Background and Experience
- Education: Kshitij is a college dropout, having left his electronics and communication degree program after the third semester. He is largely self-taught in software development.
- Professional Journey: Before founding Blue Sky Analytics, he worked as a core engineer at Hiver, an early-stage tech startup, where he contributed significantly to product development. His journey in software began with freelance work and various projects involving web development using technologies like WordPress, PHP, and React.1245
Contributions at Blue Sky Analytics
At Blue Sky Analytics, Kshitij leads a team of developers and data scientists focused on analyzing vast amounts of satellite data to create sophisticated environmental datasets. One of their notable projects is SpaceTime, a data visualization platform designed to enhance collaboration and support climate action initiatives. The company aims to build a comprehensive environmental data stack that can track climate change in real-time and provide valuable insights for various stakeholders.1235
Philosophy and Vision
Kshitij emphasizes the importance of open-source technology (FOSS) in their work, highlighting how it has allowed them to operate with minimal costs for data acquisition by utilizing freely available satellite data from organizations like NASA and ESA. His vision includes making significant contributions to the open-source community while providing accessible environmental data for climate action.125
Current Role
As CTO, Kshitij continues to innovate within the realm of climate technology, driving efforts to automate processes across various functions within Blue Sky Analytics and fostering a culture of collaboration among his team members.34
Highlights
In the past two years, Blue Sky Analytics has analyzed TBs of data, delivered five datasets and built platforms for data visualization and distribution from scratch. The not-so-secret sauce of achieving these milestones has been #opensource. 😄
We have always been firm believers in the power of open source and the huge role it plays in transforming the world for good. Owing to the generous open data policy of organizations like NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration & European Space Agency - ESA, we have been able to build a business analysing GBs of satellite data daily and crunching them into useful insights.
It gives me immense pleasure to sponsor FOSS4G 2022 Firenze and contribute to propelling the open source community forward. Catch us at the event to learn more about how we are leveraging open source data to tackle climate change.
👋 At the event? Meet us at booth 9 in the plenary room on level 2 from 23-26 August!
