When did ensuring your engineering team is 100% utilized with ‘feature’ work become a success metric for PMs?
I’ve heard from PMs that they feel compelled to always have enough high-impact specs ready for their engineering teams, and there is less of a willingness to work on technical debt.
I think this stems from a fear that: “If I have more shots at the target, I have a better chance at exceeding my metrics.” “If I showcase I can ship a lot, I am doing a great job.”
This is a mistake many PMs make—focusing on quantity vs. quality.
Focusing on less allows you to:
- Carve out more time to go very deep on each of your features.
- Unlock more time for thinking and getting ahead strategically.
- Reserve additional time to re-run failed experiments with new insights.
At the end of the day, shipping quality features will increase your chances of hitting your metrics and creating a charter that is trusted at your company.
♻️ Repost this for your network if you found it helpful. Thank you!
Many PMs believe running experiments is only about improving metrics.
But there's so much more to it than just numbers.
Here are four other ways experiments can help you as a PM:
-
Find a New Direction Experiments can show your team new opportunities and paths to explore. By trying new ideas, you can discover strategies you might have missed.
-
Build Trust Every experiment, whether it succeeds or fails, helps build trust among your team and executives. Showing that you learn from every outcome lets teams work more independently.
-
Validate your Assumption We often have assumptions about our audience, market, and product features. Experiments let us test these assumptions and make sure our plans match reality. It also helps you build confidence in cases where it’s very low.
-
Reduce Risk Testing ideas on a smaller scale first helps you minimize potential negative impacts on your overall metrics. This way, you can quickly adjust it if something doesn’t work out.
