Highlights
Time to talk about Everest vs Denali! But before I do, I wanted to share some positives from Denali.
Given the fact that I did minimal endurance training for almost a couple of years leading up to the expedition - I was super happy that throughout the climb I didn't bonk or get anywhere close to it, zero cramps barring first couple of days when I felt mild sensation in my rec fem, my max heart rate touched 175bpm just once for a short spurt during the summit push otherwise my average hovered around 110-120 bpm, my resting heart rate was between 50-60 including at the summit camp, my spo2 didn't go below 85, my appetite was out of the roof, minimal dependency on NSAIDs, as with every single climb I have done till now - no diamox or dex, and finally given the workload, long distances, heavy packs, sore back and shoulders, multiple blisters and a bit of mental struggle early on - surprisingly in the end the climb felt more like a slightly tough 6000er.
Coming to the main point - Everest vs Denali. Before I share my opinion - let me outright say that it's silly to compare mountains. That said - from my perspective - Everest on standard north/south col routes is far harder than Denali west buttress. Don't get me wrong - Denali was super tough and challenging. There was some awesome climbing on sections such as motorcycle hill, headwall, autobahn, pig hill - however - as I think more - these were less steep than even some of the moderate sections on Everest. IMO - Everest is far steeper, colder, windier, exposed AF, risky AF. Heck the summit of Denali is literally where Everest begins! If the fixed lines are removed on Everest, and there's zero Sherpa support - 99% of "client" climbers would not even make it to Camp 1, let alone the summit. Conversely, if there was a fixed line on Denali, and some additional support, honestly speaking Denali would just become a regular 6000er.
Yes many "Everesters" find Denali hard and turn around (one on my team did), but I think a lot of them underestimate Denali and that is their undoing. IMO - Everest at 8848 is a far tougher, riskier and a challenging undertaking than Denali.
Peace out.
