This week, I wrote a bit about Selina, the digital nomad focused chain of hotels/hostels and their recent dramatic collapse. How did they go from a valuation of $1.2 billion to losing 99.5% of their stock value?

When I started digging into this story, I initially thought that it might be an interesting bellwether for the state of travel and digital nomadism. Now digging into the details, the situation reeks more of mismanagement, lack of cohesive vision, and a belief that they could take a "tech" style growth approach (see also, WeWork) that resulted in huge operating losses.

A few weeks ago, you may have seen headlines about the repeal of “Chevron deference” by the Supreme Court alongside social media posts by outdoor activists lamenting the decision because of the ramifications that the decision will have on environmental policy.

Since then, things have been pretty quiet on the topic, which makes this a good time to really dig into how we got here, the impacts going forward, and what’s happened already.

For Mountain Gazette.
