I got a lot of questions about Snowflake’s Polaris announcement at Summit 2024 last week. Some folks wanted to know what I thought about Snowflake launching “a data catalog”.

But Polaris isn’t that kind of data catalog, and Alation and Collibra aren’t worried about it.

The relevant analog for Polaris isn’t enterprise data catalogs. It’s Databricks acquisition of Tabular. Databricks is preventing Iceberg from competing with Delta Lake, and Snowflake is making sure the door is open to running on data stored in lake formats, even if they have to help out some competing query engines to do it.

Polaris is only a “catalog” for Iceberg in that it allows query engines to read data stored in Iceberg tables, not a "catalog" in the sense of data discovery or governance.

I think those folks would be more interested in Snowflake Horizon, which is a data governance feature set, and—unsurprisingly—integrates with Polaris :)

Today I'm at Snowflake Summit 2024 and excited to announce that Bigeye now automatically maps end-to-end lineage for analytics dashboards across cloud data warehouses, ETL tools, and legacy data sources!

This is an industry first- data observability companies have offered basic data lineage for many years, but no one has been able to crack how to trace column level lineage from end-to-end, especially in enterprise environments.
