Highlights
September is Pediatric Cancer awareness month, a cause I’m very passionate about.
Below are a compilation of my thoughts. Hoping to bring more awareness around the importance of research and the lack of access to other parts of the world where we already have the medicine, research, and resources!
“cancer should not be a death sentence, no matter where a child lives”
Facts:
-
Since the inception of St Jude’s in the early 1960’s, US childhood cancer survival rates have increased from 20%-80%.
-
Unfortunately, in low income countries, ONLY 20% of pediatric cancer patients are cured.
-
Only 4% of federal funding for cancer research goes to pediatric cancer.
-
To an extent, we are still utilizing the same methods to treat pediatric cancer as we did 50 yrs ago.
-
Chemotherapy toxicity - some high dose chemo drugs require the children to be showered every 6-8 hours (these are not normal showers), woken up in the middle of the night to avoid chemical burns to their skin.
-
“The Emperor of all Maladies” does a great job of describing how far we have come with cancer research, yet in many ways we are still as barbaric as we were 50 yrs ago in treatment: poisoning the body and removing body parts. Researchers are hard at work continuously iterating to create less toxicity and increased efficacy to target the cells that do survive the strongest of chemotherapy out there today. That takes time, testing, money, and all at the loss of the lives of children.
What’s been done so far:
-
2018 the WHO and St Jude partnered to establish a global initiative with a goal to increase the childhood cancer survival rate to 60% by 2030!
-
In late 2021, they introduced an initiative to launch a platform which would dramatically increase the access to childhood cancer medicines across the world. This infrastructure will help ensure every child has access to lifesaving cancer medications and developing treatment standards.
Access to care is not an easy problem to solve, but when we have the medical research, the medicine, the ongoing clinical standards, and the barrier is the access to these options, how can we fail our children?
Two of my favorite organizations that support Pediatric Cancer research and/or families who are going through this. 1 global and 1 local!

Celebrating and appreciating doctors for all they do for patients is within the core of #wheel and why we are so passionate about our mission. Today is no different, but join us in wishing a happy #nationaldoctorsday to all the physicians out there. Honored to have finally been able to meet one of our very own, Adam Sasso, MD, FAAFP! Thank you for all you do!
