Lakey Boyd, AICP, CEcD, is a community development professional who previously served as the President and CEO of Columbia Association (CA) in Maryland. She began her role at CA on May 3, 2021, and left the position in January 2023.12 Boyd has a background in city planning and extensive experience in economic and community development, having worked on projects in over 50 cities.1
During her tenure at Columbia Association, Boyd was recognized for her efforts to engage with the community, embrace new voices, and chart a future course for the planned community created by James Rouse in the 1960s.2 She was known for attending local events, interfacing with residents, and seeking relationships with business owners and community leaders.4

My senior team pulled together for a special project for the holidays. For any of us who might be caught up in the holiday rush right now, I thought now is the time to share a reminder to keep perspective.
CA’s senior team donated Welcome Kits to Grassroots Crisis Intervention Center, a 24/7 single point access for behavioral health, crisis and homeless services for individuals and families in need throughout Howard County. Welcome Kits are an assemblage of the variety of household items that help you get settled into a new home.
For the folks that Grassroots serve, moving into permanent housing can feel, in and of itself, pretty close to a miracle. To have the kinds of items on hand as you move in that many of us don’t think twice about picking up at a store in a single trip or buying as housewarming gifts can be a gift beyond words.
I know from my own lived experience what being in a crisis state, in the in-between, or among the purposely unseen feels like. I always carry a part of those experiences with me as I have moved through life. Being part of giving to others what they actually need is a way to use your privilege to make a positive impact.
I’m sharing this on LinkedIn because I believe it is important that many of us who are gainfully employed and are in positions that can be seen as having “made it” normalize sharing these experiences. We come from all walks of life and the more we share the windy, non-linear path to success, I think the more people will find ways to persevere when their path zigs or zags.
Take a moment from the holiday rush, to-do list, and pursuit of that must-have item to center on the gratitude of who is in your life and what you have. Consider what you, your team, or your organization might be able to do to serve the community you are in.
