On Tuesday, I shipped my first international order to a customer in Austria. International shipping is neither free nor simple, and I felt a mix of excitement and anxiety about ensuring that my creation arrives safely and on time.
Here’s a summary of the international shipping process to an EU country, based on my experience:
- VAT and IOSS Number: Etsy collects VAT, so it's crucial to include the correct Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS) number and indicate the value in Euros on the package.
- Harmonization Number (HTS Code): Each item requires a Harmonization number, though there can be multiple codes for the same item. It’s important to identify and list the correct code.
- Item Weight: Accurately noting the weight of each item is necessary. I learned that the weight should be measured with the item wrapped in its protective packaging. The total weight on the shipping form should match the package’s actual weight, rounded up if needed.
- Item Value: On the shipping form, the value listed should be the retail price of the item, excluding VAT and shipping costs.
- VAT and Vendor ID on Package: To prevent the customer from paying taxes twice, include the VAT amount and your vendor ID on the package's exterior.
I’m eagerly awaiting the delivery and feedback. My goal is to bring joy to daily routines and mundane tasks, especially for those living with disabilities. It’s fulfilling to channel my humor, creativity, and care into my artistic work and share it with others.
Summer Quarter Accomplished
Managerial Accounting, the 2nd and last required accounting class of my degree is officially passed as is Business Project Management (with an A grade). I feel proud of my efforts in both areas and delighted to have been granted a partial Pell Grant for next year which will cover some of my tuition.
A small update on the growing side hustle, I enjoy my customers so much! It has been so delightful to send things out that I created. My favorite part is packaging up small surprises for customers. a.k.a. Ah! The element of surprise.
My least favorite part is the shipping. I do not fully trust Etsy or eBay labels to correctly cover the postage. At least 1 out of 4 things I ship out, the postage is wrong if you trust them despite weighing and measuring everything. For that reason, I wait in line at the post office to avoid unreliable shipping. Either some testing of shipping calculation was missing, or they all were tested, and it was deemed unimportant to fix. A reminder that software bugs impact people. When sellers are spending time in line at the post office rather than building things they can sell, both to earn less money. Etsy customer service is top notch though! It made me happy to be using their platform.
I am working on negotiating my first-ever wholesale price to purchase a base item! Keep your fingers crossed for me.
